Derek originates from Plymouth. He was born in 1960 at his grandparents’ public house 'The Bedford Vaults' in Old Town Street and in 1970 the family moved to St Germans in Cornwall. After leaving school he studied to become a hairstylist, leading to a successful career including a teaching position at Plymouth College.

In 1983 Derek relocated to London and worked as a designer and stylist (in film, photography, television, video and performance), as an assistant director on music videos and was also engaged in artist management and PR. His work was wide-ranging, predominantly associated with the music industry, working with various international artists such as Kiki Dee, Annie Lennox, Shakespeare’s Sister, Morrissey, Elton John, and Rod Stewart. He has worked throughout Europe and toured the USA, Australia, Japan, and South America. 

After returning to the South West he completed a BA (Hons) Fine Art at Plymouth University in 2010, where he is now studying MA Contemporary Art Practice. He currently resides in a remote cottage on the Duchy of Cornwall Estate and has an atelier in Plymouth’s historic Laira Battery.

Derek has exhibited work in numerous solo and group shows in London, Berlin and south west England. He is represented by: Host Galleries (Plymouth), Artbridge and Luminaire Arts (London), Singulart (Paris), Saatchi Art, Rise Art and Artfinder.
